16th Annual Tennis Camp a HUGE SUCCESS!! Saturday, June 27, 2009 The Chandana Kannada Sangha (CKS) hosted a charity tennis event to benefit Swami Vivekananda Youth Group (SVYM. Web: http://svym.org.in). The event was a tennis camp for kids between ages 5 and 18. Midtown Tennis Club in Overland Park, KS hosted the event free of charge for CKS. Over 45 children participated and the CKS raised over $1,000.00 from this event. The CKS banner right beside Midtown banner provided an excellent idea about the partnership between the two entities. The membership director, Brad Houx made this event possible for the CKS. The teaching professionals at Midtown, Lorenzo Barrientez, Kerlin Butchee, Nina Jagasia, Geoff Norton, Guerin Smith, Emily Huston kept the children busy with drills for forehand, backhand, volleys, overheads, movements, hand-eye coordination exercises, and different stances. The purpose of the event was not only to raise the money for a worthwhile cause, but also to expose children to the great sport of tennis. After about 10 minutes of warm-up exercises, children were divided by age and placed on different courts. Kids had fun and learned how to play tennis at the same time. When an hour and a half quickly passed, it was time for the drills to stop. As a special treat, the children got a chance to watch the real tennis professionals play an entertaining of doubles. The children were awed by the intensity and skill of Lorenzo, Nina, Geoff, and Guerin. After the doubles demo, the executive committee of the CKS thanked each teaching pro by name and rewarded them with a token of appreciation, (which I later learnt was two movie passes to AMC Theaters). Then everyone went upstairs to snack on homemade cookies and brownies. When asked, all children replied that they had enormous fun and would do it again given a chance. The event was immensely successful, in that, it raised money for a charitable cause and helped kids instigate an interest in tennis. Thanks to everyone who attended. Thanks to the CKS executive committee and Midtown Tennis Club for hosting this event. Thanks to all the parents, individuals who donated money, and the business sponsors. -Report by Ashwini Sreedhara CKS Youth Committee.
